    The Bureau of Survey and Certification (BSC) within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA is the identified state agency to perform survey and certification activities on behalf of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)). The environmental sanitarian performs routine individual and/or team survey activities on behalf of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The environmental sanitarian position will participate in federal initial and recertification routine surveys, and complaint investigations for a diverse group of long-term care and non-long term care providers/suppliers following the regulations in the CMS State Operations Manual (SOM). The survey tasks focus on environmental health topics as well as emergency preparedness. The facilities and provider/suppliers include long-term care facilities, End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), and hospitals.

    NOTE: Interview and hiring preference may be given to applicants with Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian qualifications and experience.

    This posting is for five regions of the state: Detroit South, Detroit Central, Lansing North, Lansing Northwest, and Up North.  Refer to map attached. While work is generally performed within an assigned region, assignments may require travel to and work in other regions.

    The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is currently recruiting for an Environmental Quality Analyst 12 (Onsite Wastewater Program Needs Assessment Analyst) position within the Drinking Water and Environmental Health Division.  The location of this position will be either the Lansing, Jackson, Warren, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Cadillac, Bay City, Gaylord, or Marquette District Office based on the selected candidate.  This position is being filled as a limited-term assignment (up to two years) with the potential to become permanent, but there is no guarantee.  The position is open to all qualified applicants and interested applicants must apply through NEOGOV.

    EHS Food Sanitarian – Full time / Petoskey-Harbor Springs – Emmet County

    The Food Sanitarian is the primary contact for the on-site Environmental Health Services programs in Emmet County, who acts as a professional representative of the Health Department of Northwest Michigan, and is responsible for the execution of general environmental health programs, such as, but not limited to -

    • Inspecting and evaluating food service establishments and mobile food units
    • Licensing temporary food events
    • Conducting complaint investigations
    • Responding to food-borne illness activity
    • Regulation enforcement and compliance associated with these programs
    • Participating in Public Health Emergency Preparedness exercises and community responses

    Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, science, engineering, or related field is required, with Michigan or Nationally Registered applicants highly desired. One to three years of environmental health inspection and compliance activities is preferred, although no specific prior experience is required. Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license and current automobile insurance is necessary.

    The Health Department of Northwest Michigan offers a competitive wage, with further consideration for national or Michigan registered applicants, an excellent benefit package, and generous paid time off. Wage is commensurate with experience and begins at $64,563.20 per year.

    Food Industry Specialist 13 (Regional Food Service Spl) - Local Health Services

    The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is currently recruiting for a permanent, full-time Food Industry Specialist 13 (Local Health Services Unit) position within the Human Food Division. 

    Job Summary:
    The Food Service Program is required by the Michigan Food Law to provide evaluation, consultation, and training services to Michigan’s 45 local health departments. This position serves as a state-wide resource specialist and technical expert responsible for the implementation of the retail Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) food safety program.  The specialist is also responsible for the training and consultation of local health department staff in the conduct of the food service program, the standardization of local health department food service program trainers as assigned, and participation as an evaluator in the Michigan Local Public Health Accreditation Program.  

    Statewide travel and overnight stays are sometimes required when conducting multi-day accreditation, trainings, or standardization evaluations throughout the state.
