GENERAL SUMMARY

The purpose of this job is to supervise and train environmental health staff to perform various technical and operational duties. Manages long-term programs and budget planning. Responds to and prepares for public health emergencies and performs the role of liaison between the office and state agencies and local jurisdictions. This position supervises the Land Water and Wastewater program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the work of assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Performs Quality Assurance/Quality Control of all food safety reports, facility reports, plan reviews, sewage treatment system, well permits, final inspection reports, letters, and other outgoing documentation; ensures compliance with state Minimum Program Requirements and internal standards.
  • Designs and permits commercial sewage treatment systems; oversees facility process requirements, facility approval, and outbreak response.
  • Reviews and maintains expense and revenue budget; creates budget adjustments and forecasts; supervises ordering equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares for and responds to public health emergencies.
  • Resolves issues with clients and contractors; describes proper code and policy interpretations to the public.
  • Liaises between office, state agencies, and local jurisdictions.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics, Geology, or a related field
  • 5 to 7 years of related work experience in environmental health   
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • National Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Michigan Registered Sanitarian.
