The Jackson County Health Department seeks a qualified and motivated individual to join our team as the Director of Environmental Health. Under the supervision of the Health Officer, the Director is responsible for overseeing the Environmental Health Division, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal environmental health statutes, and managing the division's professional and clerical staff. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong leadership skills and a background in environmental health management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, organize, and manage all aspects of the Environmental Health Division, including personnel, budgeting, and administration.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws.
- Assess operations and resources, recommend improvements, and implement cost-saving measures.
- Prepare and administer the annual budget, ensuring proper use of budgetary and purchasing procedures.
- Supervise and evaluate staff performance, ensuring training and professional development needs are met.
- Interpret and enforce environmental health laws and standards with the Health Officer.
- Establish program priorities and oversee inspections of public and private facilities for health standard compliance.
- Assist residents and professionals in resolving environmental health issues, providing technical recommendations, and explaining relevant laws and codes.
- Monitor compliance and take enforcement actions, including facility closures, when necessary.
- Stay current with legislative and regulatory developments through ongoing professional development.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental health, with supervisory experience.
- Strong understanding of environmental health laws, codes, and regulations.
- Experience with budget management and staff supervision.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Registered Sanitarian or equivalent certification.
- Experience working with diverse community groups and stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects.
